چکیده

Porosity is a result of a deficiency in the production process that could lead into the mechanical degradation of CFRP composite structures. Therefore, some checkpoints for determining its presence during part manufacturing have to be established, verifying that precise threshold values are not exceeded. Currently, porosity characterization is carried out by an indirect way using ultrasonic techniques. Depending on the evaluation of signal attenuation, only a qualitative assessment can be performed. In this study, a tomographic study for a non-destructive porosity characterization on CFRP aerospace parts is also presented that lead into an accurate and quantitative assessment of pore volume, size, location and distribution.

Advanced X-Ray Tomographic Methods for Quantitative Characterisation of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers

In recent years, a strongly growing demand of aeronautic industry for light weight materials like carbon fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) motivated by economic and environmental issues is observed. The main interest of using CFRP composites is based on weight reduction, and on the high fatigue resistance capabilities. The next generation aircrafts, as the Airbus A350 XWB aim to be made of more ...

Porosity Maps - Interactive Exploration and Visual Analysis of Porosity in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers

In this work a novel method for the characterization of porosity in carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) is presented. A visualization pipeline for the interactive exploration and visual analysis of CFRP specimens is developed to enhance the evaluation workflow for non-destructive testing (NDT) practitioners based on specified tasks. Besides quantitative porosity determination and the calcul...

Empirical correlation for porosity deduction from X-ray computed tomography (CT)

For obtaining reservoir petrophysical properties, for example porosity, non-destructive methods such as X-ray computed tomography, CT, seems to be precise and accurate. Porosity is deducted from the CT image with a single scan via different techniques, such as pore space detection by image segmentation techniques then correlation with porosity. More than one hundred samples with carbonate li...

Preparation and Characterization of Bismuth Sulfide (Bi2S3) Nanostructures by Ultrasonic Method

In the present work, Bi2S3 nanostructures have been synthesized with the aid of thioglycollic acid (TGA) a solvent, capping agent, and sulfide source in the presence of ultrasonic method. The as-synthesized products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The band gap ...
